Brazilian couturier Carlos Miele channeled the tropics of his homeland for Spring 2010 on Monday, Sept. 14, at fashion week in New York as a setting sun backdrop and burnt toned lights set the mood.
Beginning his show with a novel twist, Miele had three models walk to the end of the runway and gesture playfully at each other as two of the women signaled the third model in an ombre pink chiffon mini dress to start the show.
Guava, violet and turquoise represented the tropical flair, matched up with boleros and belts made from silk dreadlocks - mimicking Brazilian-African hair from which Miele said he found beauty and inspiration for the season.
Graphic prints were modified from city photos and beach photos that, as Miele said after the show, were pictures from his personal gallery that he took and digitally edited. While the colorful prints translated well on chiffon, looking like flowing water colors, the black and white numbers fell short due to lack of brilliance. Embellishments were congregated on shoulders of dresses and of boleros, where detailing with miniature mirrors and sequins amped up the overall effect.
A beige silk mini dress with gold embroidery was the perfect complement to a night out at Sao Paulo's hotspots after a crisp, relaxing day on the beach. In gown form, the embroidery was heightened by a loose train with motion, a look that will likely have a red carpet moment this year.
