BRONWYN COSGRAVE calls Hemmerle one of the best jewellery brands in the world and she's not the only one to think so - the V&A has just acquired a Hemmerle bangle for its permanent collection. The German brand, which once made royal standards for the Bavarian court - and also made one for King George V in 1911 as a gift from the Bavarians - is now run by Stefan Hemmerle with the help of his son Christian, and both scour the globe for unusual and rare stones and materials to turn into exquisite jewellery. Unusual treasures such as walrus teeth and hollow stones harvested from the Utah desert after a lightening strike are matched-up to stunning effect with brown diamonds, fire opals and South Sea pearls. Every handmade piece is unique - through different combinations of materials - making them extra special.
