Cybele Malinowski

Cybele Malinowski - Photographer, Blue Murder Studios

It would be an underwater photograph at North Bondi when the Sydney summer is on heat.

With an eye for capturing those dynamic moments when the stars (usually rock stars) align, Cybele Malinowski's photography holds a mirror up to the Sydney scene.

Where do you go to get inspired?

Bookshop

Ariel bookstore, and my mum's bookshelf

Magazine
POP, Summerwinter, Colors, Italian Vogue, Dazed and Confused, Nylon

Website
flickr.com This communal site for amateur and professional photographers alike is an endless source of inspiration, and feedback.

Outdoor space
Centennial park, for jogging and photo-shoots. I have been going there since I was a little kid on a tricycle. It has so many hidden gardens and forests; I am still discovering new places to shoot there.

Creative space
My studio, 'blue murder studios' in Chippendale is a beautiful and light place where I work away into the wee hours on shoots or on photoshop. Cafe Giulia on Abercrombie St is my saviour. Every morning and every lunch I am there without fail. I also find my car a bit of a creative haven. I turn the music up, wind the window down and just drive. Ideas come at me as the headlights of other cars vanish behind me.

Gallery
I must admit, since the internet has taken over I have been gallery exploring online. I can visit artists work all over the world. I love Tim Olsen's gallery in Paddo, and of course the MCA and NSW Gallery. I take a pencil and sketch book and get lost in the artwork. When you are standing in front of an artwork, there is most certainly a more tangible and engaging process than viewing a work on your laptop screen.

Cinema
The Verona

Restaurant
Sushi Suma on Cleveland St. If you haven't tried their Kaiso salad, you haven't tried a salad.

Who is your ultimate Sydney style icon?
Ken Done is back. I have secret crush on the 80s.

What element of style does Sydney have that the rest of the world needs?
Ken Done.

Who in your sphere is an up and coming Sydneysider to watch?
Ladyhawke. She has just moved over to the UK with Island records and making waves, which will inevitably make their way to our shores.

What would advice would you give to aspiring people in your field?
Work hard and just stick with it. There is no simple way. You just have to have faith and persistence. Try to find a mentor; someone who has been there and is willing to show you the ropes. I was so lucky to have my brother Justin to take me under his wings.
