Future couture: Directions in design

A hotbed of talent

If you want an insider view into what the future holds for Sydney fashion, head down to The Strand Arcade to take in The Future Directions Exhibition. Students from Sydney’s most prestigious fashion TAFE at Ultimo are currently displaying a selection of their couture creations. Spread out over three levels of the Victorian arcade, the exhibition, now in its third year, acts as a showcase for students enrolled in three-year Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design.

Ultimo TAFE is well known and much regarded as Sydney’s starting point for some of the country’s most successful designers. Australian fashion luminaries Akira Isogawa, Nicky Zimmermann, Lisa Ho, Alex Perry and Mira Vidovic (Mad Cortes) have all spent time stretched over student cutting tables there. Along those lines, think of the exhibition as a crystal ball of sorts. This probably won’t be the last time you’ll see displays of fashion panache from this crop, but this week will be last chance to gather material for the old “I knew their work when...” line. You read it here first.

The Strand Arcade, 412–414 George Street, Sydney 2000. Until 30th March (www.strandarcade.com.au)
