The Top 5 Hottest Colors for Spring 2011

Spring Flowers

Although we’re not even a week into February, according to Punxsutawney Phil, spring is in fact just around the corner. Yes, despite the frigid weather and dreary skies, soon enough, warmer weather will be on its way.

If you’re still antsy about waiting for springtime, why not try out one of the season’s trendy colors now? This year, the colors just scream spring, so they’re sure to cure even the gloomiest of winter blues.

Here are the five colors you will be seeing everywhere this spring:

1. Pink

Pink

If you keep up with color trends, you’ll know that honeysuckle is 2011′s “it” color. The rich pink shade is both girly and sweet and works as a great base for many different looks. For example, you can pair the color with orange or yellow and wear multiple brights together or keep your look classic by pairing a pink top with denim or khakis. The possibilities are endless, so invest in a new pink item (or two!) for spring.

Try it out:

Pink Clothing and Accessories
Shorts, Converse, Lipstick, Blouse, Bracelet, Skirt

2. Bright Orange

Orange

As Caitlyn wrote in this week’s “Would You Wear?”, bright orange will also be a huge color trend this spring. This citrus-y hue is sure to make a bright and bold impact. Since it’s still so cold out, try this trend out with an accessory or even rock some orange nail polish. Once springtime hits, be sure to try orange on season-appropriate pieces like sundresses, sandals and bikinis.

Try it out:

Orange Clothing and Accessories
Cardigan, Necklace, Dress, Nail Polish, Pants, Wedges

3. Yellow

Yellow

Is there any color out there cheerier than yellow? This spring, stores will be carrying a range of yellow-colored clothing and accessories, in shades ranging from deep marigolds to soft, buttery hues. Since yellow is one of the trickier shades to wear, be sure to find your perfect shade by using our easy, how-to guide.

Try it out:

Yellow Clothing and Accessories
Dress, Clutch, Skirt, Flats, Top, Earrings

4. Tropical Blue

Tropical Blue

If you just can’t wait for spring break, you can get the feeling of a tropical island by wearing an item in this gorgeous blue shade. Just like pink, blue is another versatile color that will translate into many different looks. Be sure to pair it with white to give off that ultimate springtime-y feel.

Try it out:

Blue Clothing and Accessories
Top, Bag, Bracelet, Sandals, Skirt, Dress

5. Lavender

Lavender

If you want a change from all the bright springtime hues, muted lavender will also be a popular springtime shade worth trying. This dreamy and soft shade is a cross between purple and gray and adds a sophisticated vibe to any wardrobe. You could even use some lavender eyeshadow to spice up your basic smokey eye.

Try it out:

Lavender Clothing and Accessories
Dress, Pumps, Blouse, Tank Top, Eyeshadow, Scarf

Looks on Campus: Lindsay – Gonzaga University

In the dead of winter, amidst freezing temperatures, and only a few days after a snowstorm, students around campus were trekking through the ice, snow, and soggy grass wearing heavy-duty boots and bulky layers. So when I spotted Lindsay wearing a stylish outfit that was not only fashionable, but functional too, I knew I had to take her photo. Lindsay stayed warm with strategic layers, combining texture and color for an ensemble that looked both comfortable and unique. Read on to learn more about Lindsay’s style!

Lindsay 101

Lindsay, a college fashionista from Gonzaga University

Name: Lindsay

School: Gonzaga University

Class Standing: Sophomore

Major: Special Education with a minor in Philosophy

Hometown: Dalton Gardens, Idaho

Hobbies/Interests: “I do something called cowboy mounted shooting – it’s an equestrian sport. It’s like barrel racing, where you shoot balloons with two guns.”

Let’s Talk Fashion

Who or what inspires your style? “Mostly other people. I don’t pay a whole lot of attention to celebrity style or high-fashion. Just mostly street style.”

Where do you like to shop? “I like shopping at Forever 21, Target, and thrift stores – anywhere that has inexpensive clothes. I have a general rule: other than jeans, I don’t spend more than $20 on an item!”

What are your favorite trends right now? “I really like how people are combining florals and lace with more masculine items, like military inspired pieces.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “I’d say be really careful to dress for your body. Most people look better when they dress for their body type. And don’t be afraid to combine things that aren’t ‘supposed’ to be combined – like browns and blacks, patterns, etc.”

Elements of Lindsay’s Outfit

1. Rings & Nail Polish

Lindsay’s unique collection of silver rings complement her outfit and, since they are all different, really add interest to her look. They also draw attention to her icy blue nail polish, one of the hottest nail color trends this winter.

2. Backpack

Fashion at Gonzaga University - student wearing a backpack

When you have four classes in a row and heavy textbooks to lug around all day, a tote is usually not a great option (shoulder pain – ouch!). The best way to save your shoulder from crying out in agony is to invest in a backpack – and whoever says backpacks are not stylish can think again! Lindsay’s backpack is an example of a cute and functional way to carry books and other class essentials around campus without sacrificing style.

3. Boots, Tights, and Socks

Cute boots, one of the latest fashion trends at Gonzaga University

“I got my boots for only $9,” Lindsay said about her trendy lace-up boots. Boots are a great winter staple because they keep your feet warm without letting snow and rain puddles leak into your shoes. Adding a pair of yellow tights creates contrast, and her cute knit socks break up the colors while adding another layer of warmth.

What do you think?

4 Ways to Wear Over-the-Knee Boots

4 ways to wear over the knee boots

If you’ve been reading CF regularly, you know we love over-the-knee boots. But even after reading this article and this article myself, I was still hesitant to try a pair. As a girl who is 5 feet tall, owns way too many shoes, and is broke, I decided that I would restrain myself from buying a pair. But recently, I had to buy some for a costume. And let me tell you, I am so glad I did! They’re my new obsession.

For this post, I will show you 4 different ways that I have styled my black suede over-the-knee boots in my daily life and how you can, too!

Going to Class

As a student, going to class constitutes the majority of the week. And if you enjoy sleep as much as I do, it can be tempting to throw on the first t-shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes in sight when you’re in a hurry. But I want to show you that other outfits are just as easy put together quickly. Here is an example of how I would wear these boots to class.

This outfit was actually inspired by someone I saw while I was walking to class the other day. I love the look of a printed skirt paired with a classic t-shirt and a slouchy cardigan. If it’s chilly where you are, I’ve included some black tights for warmth. Finally, this light blue-green necklace picks up on the blue flowers in the skirt, and simple gold heart studs finish off the look.

Exploring the City

After five days of classes, nothing is better than leaving the confines of the lecture hall to explore the city. Of course, where you decide to explore and what you decide to do will influence the outfit you choose. The outfit I featured below, however, will hopefully be useful for many different types of adventures.

This outfit is simple, yet it still commands attention. A printed tank top is interesting underneath this simple gray cardigan. Tuck in some medium-wash jeans into your boots, add on a ring for visual interest, and grab this cross-body bag to easily carry around your most important items for your day of exploration.

Going Out

Coming from someone whose school borders Beverly Hills (emphasis on HILLS), around here, walking around in heels is not the most practical choice for a night out. These boots provide a much-needed dose of comfort while at the same time completing your typical going out look.

A cute dress like the one above works perfectly with a pair of over-the-knee boots. I wanted to keep this look simple since the dress has so much character. Put on some simple black earrings and finally swipe on some red lipstick to really make your lips pop.

Lounging in Your Dorm

After class, it’s easy to change into your favorite pair of sweats. But in college, whether you’re meeting up with a study group, going to the dining hall, or grabbing a quick late night snack, people are everywhere. Among all these people, looking your best at all times will give you a boost of confidence.

Now, I don’t want you to think that I’m telling you that, “Sweats are bad and should never be worn in public,” because, come on, we’ve all done it at least once. But sometimes it’s fun to maintain your style when lounging around. This is an outfit that can help you do that.

This outfit would be a great way to incorporate these boots into a comfortable look worn while lounging around. I love dolman-sleeve tops because they are an easy and comfortable way to add interest to your outfit, and this striped one from Forever 21 does just that. Simple white jeggings complement the top and tuck easily into the boots. When relaxing, I like to keep my accessories at a bare minimum. Usually, I enjoy wearing headbands to keep my hair out of my face and when I’m not wearing a statement earring, I always have on my diamond studs.

What do you think?

Do you own a pair of over the knee boots? If not, will you give them a try now? If you do own some, what is your favorite way to style them? Where do you like to wear them? Please leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Soap Opera Style – General Hospital’s Lulu Spencer

Since sixth grade, I’ve been a soap opera junkie. I love the characters, the drama, and, most of all, the clothes. Yes, while soaps are best known for evil twins, love triangles, and back-from-the-dead returns, they are also an untapped source of inspiration for your wardrobe. No soap today is a better example of this than General Hospital.

In this four-part series, I’m going to break down the styles of four of the most popular young characters on General Hospital: Lulu Spencer, Brook Lynn Ashton, Kristina Davis, and Maxie Jones. This week, we’ll start with my favorite character, Lulu Spencer.

Who is Lulu Spencer?

The daughter of one of the most popular soap opera couples, Luke and Laura Spencer, Lulu lives her life with her heart on her sleeve. However, don’t let her pretty face fool you – Lulu’s not afraid to go after what she wants. Sure, she’s taken a few wrong turns over the years, but it looks like her luck has started to change. Between her career at a fashion magazine and her amazing boyfriend Dante, Lulu may finally be on her way to happily ever after.

Outfits Inspired by Lulu

Here are a few key looks you’ll need to take Lulu’s look from the screen to the street:

Classic Beauty

Whether she’s working in the office or grabbing a quick lunch with Dante, Lulu always looks chic. Her vintage-chic, romantic style sets her apart from her trend-following colleagues. Her closet is stocked with sweet dresses, ladylike heels, and girly accessories.

Perfect for the office, a presentation, or even a hot date, this versatile outfit is a great addition to any wardrobe. Start with a classically cut dress in a solid color – try a bold, bright hue like coral for a youthful feel. Add pair of lacy heels in black for an extra girly touch. When it comes to accessories, it’s all about capturing a funky vintage vibe, so don’t forget your bangles – they’re a Lulu staple.

Lulu might be a fashionista in the making, but she hasn’t forgotten the days when jeans and layered tees dominated her closet. She always keeps one of her old outfits on hand in case she needs to get her father and brothers out of trouble on one of their wild, globe-trotting adventures.

A complete 180 from the first look, this outfit is perfect for those lazy days when the weather isn’t the best. Get this comfy look by matching your favorite pair of jeans with a soft leather (or faux leather) jacket. Invest in some layering tops or, alternatively, some tops that just look layered, like the one below. Finish with a pair of sturdy, stylish motorcycle boots.

Party Time

After a hard week, Lulu loves to hit Jake’s Bar with her girls for round of drinks and karaoke. With the addition of a few key touches, she transforms her daytime outfit from sweet to sexy just in time to shoot some pool and turn some heads.

To score this glam look for your next night on the town, start with a dress cut similarly to the one in the first look – try a patterned dress for more pop. Switch out your professional heels for sparkly, accented ones. Ward off the evening chill with with a funky motorcycle jacket and finish the look with some bronze accessories.

From CollegeCandy: 15 Fun & Easy Dining Hall “Recipes”

Editor’s Note: This article was written by our friends at CollegeCandy! Before you click over to read the second half, know that some readers found some of CC’s content/ads to be non-work-safe. Thought you should know beforehand. Now, on to the post!

College dining hall

While most students have meal plans to avoid spending their own money, cafeteria cuisine doesn’t always match up to mom’s homemade fare. Companies like Sodexho have goals that include providing healthy meals to students, but the balance between nutritious and delicious isn’t always apparent. Doctoring up your dorm delicacies will save your money and waistline from the dreaded Freshman 15.

How do you turn that cafeteria fare into something edible delicious? I’ve got some ideas that would make even The Barefoot Contessa proud.

(Note: Some of these require a little…erm…smuggling. Grab a Ziploc bag or those Tupperware containers your mom made you buy and load ‘em up in the caf. Then sneak ‘em out and save that stuff for later.)

  • Use taco meat or shredded chicken from the Southwestern/Mexican line for midnight nachos. Because of the combination of protein, dairy, and fresh veggies, tacos and nachos can be a balanced alternative to heavier burgers.
  • Use different types of breads and cheeses from the deli line for a new grilled cheese sandwich.
  • Toast leftover bagels from breakfast with margarine for a New York style treat. Only eat half, though—one bagel is equivalent to five pieces of bread.
  • Make a fun cocktail of different juices from the drink dispenser. My old roommate combined 1/3 cranberry juice, 1/3 apple juice and 1/3 orange juice. Sounds weird, but it worked!
  • Combine crumbled ramen noodles, cereal, nuts and dried fruit as a snack mix.
  • Use hot fudge from the yogurt machine and dip pretzels/fruit into the warm chocolate for a late night fondue.
