http://beautyhill.com/img/arts/2010/Mar/01/396/howetomatchcolors.jpgStyle is not only about having the most expensive and trendy clothes, but rather by being able to mix and match. Most women deal with this issue, and that is not knowing what colors go together. Matching colors is fun and can help you spice up your wardrobe. So you should start learning a few basic things about the layout of the color wheel and the relationship between colors. Get a few color tips to match clothing that will help you become more inventive and able to establish how these colors will work when paired with one another.

Every outfit or clothing you choose to wear reflects your personality; but sometimes you just feel overwhelmed and don't know what colors look good next to each other. Matching colors is a matter of personal choice, yet a few tips of how relationships between colors work could help you create your very own style.

The color wheel

The color wheelThe color wheel shows the relationships between colors considered to be primary, secondary and tertiary.
Primary colors are red, yellow and blue.
When you mix any two primary colors in equal measure, you obtain a secondary color. Mixing red and blue gives purple, blue and yellow creates green and yellow and red gives orange. So, secondary colors are: green, orange and purple.
A tertiary color is made by mixing one secondary with its adjacent primary color. Yellowish green is a tertiary color.
When talking about matching colors there are two basic relationships:
Analogous colors are the ones sitting side-by-side on the color wheel and they usually work with one another. When matched the result is very nice as these colors are relatives and have little contrast. For example blue's analogous colors are green and purple, while red and green are orange's analogous colors.
Colors opposite to each other on the color wheel are complementary colors. When matched they contrast and intensify each other. Purple is complementary to yellow, blue to orange, red to green etc. But the reverse is always applicable.

How to match colors

  • White and black are not considered as being colors, as they are much less present in nature. Both black and white can be matched with any other color.

  • Grey is neutral, consequently it can also be matched with any color.

  • It's advisable not to wear more than 3 colors in the same outfit to maintain a coordinated look and avoid looking like a clown. In order to have a good result or if you are in doubt, use the color wheel to help you choose the colors. But remember: Less is more”.

  • An outfit must have only one dominant color.

  • Adding one complementary color allows to temper another color.

  • Try using more sober colors for the parts where you want to look thinner.

  • Vivid colors (neon) are better for the upper part of the body because they light up your face.
  • One very important thing is to match the colors of your clothes to your skin tone and your hair color.

  • If you have a very fair skin and blond, light brown or red hair you could combine: black and white, chocolate color and red, chocolate and khaki, gray and black, lavender and maroon.

  • If you have a fair skin and dark hair: maroon and yellow, navy blue and beige, beige and white, gray and maroon.

  • For a mat skin and dark hair: pink and orange, green and beige, red and grey, red and black.

  • Avoid matching: green and blue, maroon and black, red and pink, black and navy blue.
